Passive house is not just for the home - Mirboo North

Traditionally we focus on the benefits of passive design for our homes, but what about our workplaces? The new Mirboo North Medical Clinic paves the way for certified passive design in commercial projects.

Having experienced the benefits of passive design in their home, our clients were keen to apply the same sustainable approach to their medical practice in rural north Victoria. Our brief was for a practical but contemporary space to better support patient wellbeing, and passive house design was a natural fit for a medical setting where the comfort and health of end-users is a priority.

Our challenge was to address the strict town planning requirements associated with medical facilities, prioritising usability and privacy, while also meeting the rigours associated with Certified Passive House Design.

The functional floor plan is focussed on ensuring accessibility and efficient zoning, which includes two treatment rooms, as well as onsite carparking and a separate ambulance bay with private entrance.

The paired-back materials palette is complemented by a natural ventilation system, automatic sun blinds, operable windows for temperate control and minimal two kilowatt split systems for heating and cooling. Importantly, our design creates a natural calmness for the occupants, with each room enjoying a visual connection to the outdoors.

Strongly supported by locals and the council, the new clinic will provide much needed amenity for a growing community.
